After his poll nomination document was rejected due to “crucial omissions,” AAP’s Meerapur candidate Joginder Singh Bankura attempted to self-immolate by pouring kerosene on himself outside the Muzaffarnagar collectorate on Monday. Before he could fire his kerosene-soaked garments, police and others at the collectorate overpowered the former Army major subedar who had chosen for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).

The 58-year-old staged a sit-in outside the collectorate after filing his candidacy paper on January 20. He was the only one of the 26 nomination papers rejected by Meerapur Returning Officer Jayendra Kumar. The first phase of the seven-leg Assembly elections will take place on February 10 in Meerapur and 57 other constituencies.
“It was done on purpose because I was not given enough time to correct the error in my documents.” Despite my repeated pleadings, the returning officer did not pay attention to me. The local government is under coercion from the ruling party, and such authoritarianism will not be permitted,” Bankura stated.
