EducationWhat to do when you get laid off by your company

Date:

Lay-off, salary cut, job loss, and getting fired are all similar terms with a different meanings, but they all feel the same for the person who is at the receiving end of not having the needed job to work and get paid. As news is rising of companies laying off their employees due to several reasons best known to them, here are some ways of what you can do when you get the news that you are sacked or no longer needed by the company.

1) Take things as it is:

Don’t let your brain play games with you by making you think that you got laid off because of some personal vengeance or you are sidelined by the company because they want to go ahead only with their favorite employees. See life is very simple if you allow it to be. Do not complicate things by badmouthing or thinking negatively about your company that no longer needs you. You can simply accept things as they are and leave the place with no arguments and no bad feelings at all.

2) Start writing to your connections:

You can write to your genuine connections on LinkedIn or social media or emails telling them that you are looking for a better opportunity and would like to get help or assistance in case they know any company that needs a well-qualified and good-experienced candidate like you. Just don’t write why you were fired or laid off, nothing about your past company. All you need to write is how your skills can help other companies in the market upscale themselves.

3) Take a break if needed:

If you think you had enough of corporate life or startup life and now want to holiday for some time or take some rest at home, then go ahead. There is no hurry in joining another job especially if you have been heartbroken for being laid off or sacked from your present organization. You can tell your friends or relatives who are too much concerned about you staying back at home that you will figure things out after a short break.

4) Take up some courses related to your profession:

If you think you need more academic knowledge or different perspectives related to your job, then go ahead and join some interesting and short-term programs. It will keep you engaged for some time and also make you feel confident whenever someone asks you what are you doing at home? The courses can be selected based on your budget and time of course. Never take a loan for your education especially when you are not having a job. The loan amount can backfire on you if you don’t get a new job for a prolonged time.

These are some of the ways in dealing with a job loss. If you are unable to crack a job interview for your new job and explain to them the reasons why your previous company broke off the association, you can discuss with some career experts and also enroll in counseling programs. Hope these tips help you. Best luck with your new job search.
