Today, the Supreme Court rejected the proposal to postpone Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2022) exams. A plea was filed in the court to postpone the exam due to the third wave of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). The court cited that postponing the GATE exam would cause risk of “chaos and confusion” among students.

GATE is a test that assesses a student’s overall mastery of numerous undergraduate engineering and scientific disciplines in preparation for entrance to a master’s programme and employment by some government agencies.
The GATE 2022 tests will now be held physically on February 5, 6, 12, and 13 as scheduled, as per the decision from the Supreme Court.
In light of the current Covid-19 rise, 11 GATE candidates petitioned the Supreme Court, urging it to issue directives to the national government and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur (the organisers of the GATE 2022) to postpone the exams.

However, a bench of the Supreme Court, led by Justice DY Chandrachud, warned the petitioners today that the exams are a government policy matter, and that any court intervention at this point would simply cause “chaos and uncertainty” among students.
