Offline classes will start in Maharashtra from 1 February

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday permitted fully vaccinated students to attend offline lessons, allowing institutions and universities to resume physical classes on February 1 as the increase in Covid-19 cases appears to be limited to just a few towns and districts throughout the state.

The state’s higher and technical education department has issued an order to reopen degree colleges and universities, but local governments will make the final decision based on the Covid-19 situation in their respective cities or districts and in consultation with university or college administrations.

In the aftermath of a major rise in Covid-19 cases caused mostly by the Omicron strain of the coronavirus, the government decided on January 7 to suspend physical classes in colleges and universities and return to an online study mode until February 15. As part of the national immunisation programme, the state began inoculating 15 to 18-year-olds on January 3. In the state, 50.93 percent of teenagers in this age group had already taken the vaccine.
