Distractions are a part of work-life. You cannot run away from the telephones that keep ringing in your reception area of the office. You cannot ask people to shut their mouths while they discuss some office gossip. You cannot run away to a place where there can be no sound or image or people around you just so that you can complete your work in peace.

Focus is a personal skill and you need to learn how to keep working despite your colleague scrolling his or her social media feed and passing comments about the celebrities or other co-workers. You may ask now how are you going to manage to keep the distractions under control? Well, it comes with practice. Remember no person reached the heights of the mountain with no or zero practice.

The first and foremost thing is you need to have self-control. How do you develop self-control when you are bombarded with hundreds of messages on WhatsApp groups and notifications on social media networks? Well, you can schedule a timer for just that activity and keep your mobile in silent mode while you are doing an important project.
If your friend or co-worker calls you for some tea-time gossip when you are really wanting to complete that project, you can excuse yourself by saying that you are on an important project and would like to complete it. You can say the same politely rather than being harsh because, at the end of the day, no play makes Jack a dull boy. You can ask your co-workers or friends to connect with you at a mutually agreed time wherein you and they are free to just speak about anything and everything, except work.
If you are quite sensitive to sounds and lights at your workplace, you can ask your HR manager to get your place changed to a location where there are minimal sounds and lights to irritate you while you are doing the work. You can be honest about how people’s sounds keep you distracted at work and also lowers the productivity and quality of your work. Your HR manager will surely understand because, at the end of the day, they are looking for work results.
If you have been working from home and you really don’t have a personal space where you can keep your work equipment to work in silence, you can put earpods. Another option is to request your family members to do their household chores with less noise and not disturb you for unimportant or trivial things just because you are at home.
You can even check out a rental co-working space or a small separate area where it can be just you and the work. Do not go for expensive rental spaces just because you feel comfortable or proud to have your own office. You can go for minimal rental spaces or maybe even set up a small space in your home itself just for your work.
Last but not the least, if there is something more than the background noises that are distracting you like unwanted thoughts about why you are here and what you are doing at the workplace, you can simply get rid of them by taking proper counseling and discussions with your immediate manager and HR leader. I am sure these tips will help you stay focused on your work.
