Concept of the day: Employee empathy

Mam, I would like to take one week’s leave as my elderly parent needs my time at this crucial time of pandemic. He is not keeping well often and needs my company to understand the brighter side of life, said an employee to his employer.

Sorry, then you can look for another job as I cannot afford to grant you so much for your personal family issues., said the employer to the employee.

The employee decided to put down his papers and preferred to give importance to his family first over his job.

This example can be seen in many organizations wherein employees don’t get their employers’ support at the time of their crisis. And employers lose out the loyal and talented employees just because they are unable to look at their viewpoint.

Here is where employee empathy comes in place. If an employer can create a balance between his business demands and look at his employees’ issues by putting himself in the employees’ shoes then will the employer understand that life is not just a race and a company cannot accomplish its vision without the support of employees.

Employee empathy is all about creating a balance between business and employees’ demands – giving them importance at equal levels to achieve the company’s vision and mission.
