Union Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has approved the release of Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2019-20 for the States/UTs. Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala have been ranked as the highest grades for 2019-20.
The Performance Grading Index (PGI) was first published with the year 2017-18. The government will use the Performance Grading Index (PGI) to improve the school education system in the country. The Education Minister tweeted that five states and union territories, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have secured Level II (score 901-950), ie Grade I++, in PGI 2019-20. The government has introduced a performance grading index of 70 parameters to bring change in the field of school education.
The Education Minister said that PGI helps in addressing the gaps in the schools and accordingly prioritizes the areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is strong at all levels. Also, at least 13 states/UTs have shown improvement of 10 per cent or more in infrastructure and facilities. In this, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Odisha have shown more than 10 percent improvement. Nineteen states and union territories have shown 10 percent or more improvement in the governance process.
