Wearing double masks is more beneficial: Research

New Delhi: A new research has revealed that wearing two well-fitted face masks almost doubles the ability to keep SARS-CoV-2 size particles out. By this they do not reach the nose and mouth of the person wearing them and do not infect them with the corona virus. This information has been found in a study. A report published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine has revealed that the reason for the increased security is not to add more surfaces of the fabric, but to remove any emptiness or areas that are not fully fit.

Emily Sickbert-Bennett, associate professor at the University of North California (UNC) in the US and lead author of the study, said that medical procedure masks are designed based on their material with very good exit capability. But the way they fit on the face is not right. To test the masked range of Filtration Efficiency (FFE), the team filled a 10 foot by 10 foot stainless steel exposure chamber with small salt particle aerosols.

Researchers wore multiple masks to check how effective they were in keeping the particles out of their breathing area. Each person’s mask, or a combination of masks, was attached to a metal sample port to measure the particles entering the breathing space under the researchers’ masks. Researchers discovered FFE with its help. In this, he compared the particle present in the breathing space under the mask to the one present in the chamber.
