New Delhi: Senior lawyer, former Attorney General and Padma Vibhushan Soli Sorabjee passed away this morning after being infected with Corona. He was the Attorney General of the country from 1989 to 90 and then from 1998 to 2004.
Soli Sorabjee was a great advocate of freedom of expression. He has defended the freedom of the press in several historical cases in the Supreme Court of India and has been instrumental in rescinding censorship orders and restrictions on publications. In March 2002, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan Award, the second highest civilian award.
Soli Sorabji is recognized in the country’s big human rights lawyer. In 1997, the United Nations sent him to Nigeria as a special envoy, to know about the human rights situation there. Subsequently, he became a member and later chairman of the UN-Sub Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights from 1998 to 2004.
