Covid 19: 3rd Wave to start by the end of August?

According to experts, India might witness another spike in Covid-19 cases as early as August. The second wave wrecked a havoc on the Indian medical infrastructure. The months between April to June saw India witness the worst of covid 19 with cases averaging between 100,00 to 150,00 a day even in the times before peak. The third wave of Covid-19 is unlikely to be as severe as the second when India recorded over 400,000 cases per day and then began to decline.

The researchers’ prognosis is based on a statistical model, which they used to anticipate the decrease of Covid-19 instances earlier this year correctly. On Sunday, India recorded 41,831 Covid-19 cases and 541 fatalities, even as the Centre warned ten states, including the north-eastern states, Maharashtra, and Kerala, about the growing infections and urged them to take action to stop the virus from spreading.

Experts have also cautioned that the Delta version of the coronavirus, which spreads as easily as chickenpox and may be transmitted by those vaccinated, might exacerbate the outbreak. According to the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomic Consortium (INSACOG), the highly infectious Delta form of the coronavirus caused approximately 8 out of every 10 Covid-19 cases in May, June, and July.

Planning Ahead

Vaccination should be our top goal to avoid disastrous repercussions, especially for youngsters who might be the next susceptible group. India has about 15-17 crore youngsters between the ages of 12 and 18, and it should implement an advanced procurement approach similar to that used by industrialized countries to inoculate this age group.

COVID-appropriate behaviour, such as sanitizing, wearing masks, and keeping social distance, must be maintained by the general public. Maintaining a sufficient supply of life-saving medicines and oxygen concentrators should be prioritized.

Hospital beds should be expanded to accommodate children in hospitals, community centres, and other settings. Doctors and health professionals must also be educated to recognize which patients require special care and which do not to conserve time and human resources. It’s worth noting that the next 100-125 days are crucial for both the system and the people involved.
