What is Servitude?

Concept of the DayWhat is Servitude?

Date:

Servitude means when a person is in control of his owner or master. Like you might have heard stories of children who are completely submissive to their parent’s decisions and thinking. For example, a woman didn’t get married to the partner of her choice because her father didn’t approve of the inter-caste relationship. The woman had servitude to her parents for her whole life because she considered them to be her living Gods who gave birth and raised her up. You might have also seen very committed and loyal employees who have servitude to their employers.

For example, a man didn’t leave his company and stayed loyal to his employer despite him getting better offers and salary packages from elsewhere. It is because he considered his loyalty toward his employer as servitude. The man obeyed all the commands of his employer and never ever thought of doing anything in his life without the permission of his employer. Servitude of this man was a kind of slavery and confinement towards his company and his employer.

Another example is a grown-up child of an elderly woman who never thought of leaving her alone in her village to take up a job in the city. He considered serving his mother in her old age as the utmost satisfaction and happiness in life. For him, serving his aged mother was servitude, which means an attitude with a service mentality as the ultimate goal in his life. He took up a job nearby his village so that he could travel and come back to meet his elderly mom and care for her needs. He didn’t think of getting married in his lifetime because, for him, his servitude towards his aged mother was more important than anything else in life.

Servitude attitude is good as well as bad depending on the situation. For example, a company develops a culture of servitude in order to provide amazing customer service to its stakeholders. The company always leads on top of its great customer service training that has been imbibed among the employees. However, if the company does it extremely then it is setting a wrong example to its employees by only considering customers’ value over everything else.

Thus, for every activity that we do in life, moderation and balance are a must. Anything done extremely and against nature always backfires. From the above examples, you might have seen how some people think that servitude towards their parents or loved ones is the only goal in life. This leads to toxicity in relationships wherein one gives up their own freedom of choice, freedom of thinking, and freedom of living to satisfy the needs of others. Such relationships on a personal level or professional level are never considered healthy ones because someone is happy at the cost of others’ sadness or dissatisfaction in life.

Thus, if you are someone who thinks servitude has to be one of your qualities, then make sure it is with moderation and not done in excess. You will never be happy despite sacrificing your life for the happiness of others if you do it against nature.
