What is Emphasis?

Concept of the DayWhat is Emphasis?

Date:

Emphasis is when a special consideration is given to a particular thing or person or event. Emphasis means to value or prominence or attention given to a particular set of words when speaking or writing about a particular thing. For example, the teacher emphasized the particular topic in English subject because she knew that this question is most likely asked in the school exams. The students noted down the answer as soon as they understood the importance given by the teacher on the topic she was teaching.

Same way, during a meeting, the team leader emphasized that the work targets have to be met on a quarterly basis by all team members because the main boss has ordered the same. He mentioned how if the work targets fail to be delivered can lead to paying cuts, demotion, and even removal of underperforming employees. The meeting alerted many employees who were not taking their work seriously so that they can increase their time and efforts to complete the targets.

In the news channel, the newsreader was emphasizing the fact that the weather is too bad for Mumbaikars to move out of their homes and cautioned the travelers on buses and trains to reconsider their travel due to the heavy rains. Emphasis was made on travel and rains because during the rainy season, the trains and buses don’t move further due to water logging in different areas of the city.

Another emphasis example is when a father stressed to his son to realize his responsibilities because he is getting old and soon to retire from his work. Emphasis was made on the duties of a son towards the house, family, and his career so that the son takes up the charge and starts taking his career and life seriously.

Emphasis is also given to values in today’s times where there are cases reported on how family conflicts arise due to differences of opinions, division of property is demanded by all the family members because they feel insecure, and also aging parents don’t get the importance and attention by their children because of losing family values in the modern times.

Movies especially, if you see South Indian movies like Tollywood or Mollywood or Kannada cinema or Tamil cinema, you will always find some good family movies that emphasize the importance of staying united in a family, respecting your family members and relatives, leading a non-materialistic life and spiritual life, abiding by the customs and traditions that a community follows, among others.

When the coronavirus pandemic broke out all over the world, the emphasis was given on the terms like “stay at home”, “maintain social distancing”, “wear masks”, “wash hands, apply sanitizers”, “stay hygienic”, “take care of health” more than any other times in the last one century.

Emphasis is also given on a positive note when a teacher announces the student of the year awardee’s name in the class by narrating how the student took part in different activities, remained sincere in his studies, and also gave his best throughout the year, as an example to other students.
