Concept of the DayWhat is an Internship?

Date:

If you go by any definition or literal meaning of Internship, then it is all about professional work given to a learner or student studying in a university or school that may be paid or unpaid depending on the nature of the work. Internships are meant to give students a professional learning experience of doing the practical work at a company or business that they may not get to understand while learning academic books. Internships give students an idea of how they can explore various career interests and also keep learning skills to upgrade themselves to reach a top position in their field.

Usually, internship work and timings of work are decided by the employer. Employer provides relevant projects that are related to the students’ academic and also give them the exposure to make industry connections. Employers invest their time and resources to equip technical and soft skills among the students, so paying the interns or giving them recognition in terms of internship certificates or such is completely on the decision-making process of the employer. Sometimes, interns’ work commitment and willingness to learn also helps them land full-time jobs in the same organization after they complete their academic courses.

What is Career Transition?

Earlier, internships were made compulsory only in a few courses offered at the graduate and post-graduate levels so that students become aware of what the reality is, how the industry actually works and how what they are learning in their books is getting utilized in the industry. But nowadays, due to the new educational policy, many universities, schools, and colleges are planning to make internship projects compulsory for students from the class 9 level itself. Summer internships offered to students by companies usually are 40 hours a week for 10 to 12 weeks.

For example, a student planning to become a journalist, in the long run, can join a mass media course and also take up an internship to be done in his free time. Internships can be part-time or done during weekends or holidays. The internship will help the student to learn job skills and also make a foothold in the industry. The student can apply for unpaid internships that are offered for students in the newspaper companies for free to understand how the business functions and what skills it takes to become a good journalist.

One can even mention the internship experience on his resume by writing the details of the formal title, company name, location of your work, internship start date, and end date. You can list down the work responsibilities that you took in the project. You can mention the accomplishments or achievements of the internship.

Some of the internship types for school and college students include apprenticeship, externships, field experience, an internship abroad project, internship at a startup among others. Some companies also pay a fixed stipend to their interns if they are asked to travel to different locations or have to make marketing calls.

Some important skills interns learn from their job include work experience, teamwork, IT skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and networking among others.
