News Desk – Twenty years ago, a huge tsunami hit the Indian Ocean, killing many people across 15 countries. Back then, warning systems weren’t good, especially in Indonesia. They didn’t have the right tools to detect tsunamis early.

Since that disaster, things have gotten a lot better. Now, there are many new warning systems in the area that can alert people a day before a tsunami might hit, which can really help reduce damage. The United Nations helped countries get better prepared for such disasters.

Today, there are 150 stations around the world that keep an eye on earthquakes, and 75 special buoys in the oceans that can detect tsunamis by feeling changes in pressure on the ocean floor.

Technology has also improved a lot. Warning systems now work faster, thanks to better computers and smarter programs. They used to take up to 50 minutes to confirm a tsunami, but now they can do it in just 5 to 7 minutes. This quick warning can save lives by telling people about the wave before it arrives.

However, over half of the countries in the world still don’t have good warning systems for common natural events like rain or cyclones. These are mostly poorer countries where disasters have a much bigger impact, causing many more deaths compared to other places in the world.
