Mumbai: BSE’s 30-share Sensex closed above 53 thousand mark for the first time today due to all-round buying in domestic stock markets. The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also reached a new record level.

Recovering from the fall of the previous trading day, the Sensex closed at a record high of 53,054.76, up 193.58 points, or 0.37 per cent. Nifty also rose 61.40 points, or 0.39 per cent, to end trading at 15,879.65.

Investors showed confidence in medium and small companies too. BSE Midcap gained 0.58 per cent to 22,757.86 points and Smallcap gained 0.38 per cent to close at a historic high of 25,798.51 points.

Metals, basic goods and realty group companies edged up. Indices in the capital goods, banking and industrials groups also rose. Companies in the consumer durables, energy and oil and gas groups remained under pressure.

Out of 30 Sensex companies, 21 companies rose and the remaining nine declined. Tata Steel’s stock rose the most at 4.38 per cent. Bajaj Finance rose by 2.28 per cent, IndusInd Bank by 1.42 per cent, HDFC by 1.41 per cent, Nestle India by 1.26 per cent, Asian Paints by 1.19 per cent and Sun Pharma by 1.05 per cent. Titan’s stock fell 2.06 per cent.

In Asia, China’s Shanghai Composite closed with gains of 0.66 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei fell 0.96 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.60 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.40 per cent. In Europe, Germany’s DAX gained 0.93 per cent and Britain’s FTSE 0.55 per cent in early trade.
