The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has ideas to record 1 lakh daily orders in the retail sector in the coming months. The idea is to introduce a second version of its network design and agreements. This will include more features and also enhance customer experience, says a report.

The announcement of hitting 1 lakh daily retail orders was made at the recent event called ONDC Elevate, which was organized early this week. In this session, all network participants – NPs and who’s who from the government sector were available.

For the unversed, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a government-supported campaign that intends to make a unified open platform for all retail sellers and buyers all over India. ONDC is yet in its early stages of development, however, it has attracted a lot of eyeballs from important retailers to e-commerce platforms to logistics companies.

The move will take place in the coming months as the latest set of network specs will be adopted by NPs. The 1.1 version has been utilized so far and the upcoming 1.2 version will improve more features like order tracking, and order fulfillment options such as in-store pick-ups by customers, and enhance the grievance redressal process for automation to a major extent.

In a contemporary effect, ONDC has announced this ambitious target as proof of its growing adoption. The platform is believed to revolutionize the Indian retail market by making connections between buyers and sellers more transparent and effective.

The 1.1 version of ONDC specs was launched in March 2023 as a basic idea to understand how the network works with the least features and technical needs for NPs. The 1.2 version that is likely to be released in the next few weeks will be implemented by June 2023 and then there will be a 1.3 version scheduled to be released in September 2023.

Increasing competition from already well-established players like Amazon and Flipkart will be a major challenge that ONDC has to address once it is fully launched in the market. Another major challenge is its early stages of development which still makes it difficult to be widely accepted and adopted by retailers and bigwigs in the industry.

Its benefits are that it is a government-backed platform, which gives ONDC an added advantage over other retail platforms. Also, the idea to provide a transparent marketplace and fair price makes it a more convenient and flexible option for both buyers and sellers.

If ONDC is able to analyze its pros and cons in an even manner, then it has a higher chance to hit the 1 lakh mark that it has set for the platform. Some of the features that ONDC promises to offer in its upcoming versions include real-time pricing, different payment options, and easy returns, thus making it more convincing as the latest product in the Indian retail sector.

Open Network for Digital Commerce was founded to develop open e-commerce on 31st December 2022. Thampy Koshy is the CEO of the platform and it is owned by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
