In the battle of which company is doing great in the market of Artificial Intelligence, Meta has come up with a unique proposition.

The Silicon Valley giant company, which owns the most popular apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, had launched an AI technology, called LLaMA, which has the potential to power online chatbots.

However, instead of boasting the AI product, it decided to give away the system’s underlying computer code to academicians, government researchers, and others who willingly gave their email addresses to Meta.

So, basically, the company was giving its AI technology away as open-source software, which means the computer code can be freely copied, changed, and even reused. This is applicable to those who know and possess everything that can help them create chatbots on their own.

In an interview, the chief scientist of Meta – Yann LeCun said, “The platform that will win will be the open one”.

So, instead of racing with other AI makers, Meta is actually following a different approach in terms of using AI technology.

Meta’s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to believe that instead of wasting precious years in competing with others, let us share the underlying AI engines and move towards a bigger future quickly.

Meta is not competing with Google and OpenAI who are the leading companies in the new AI arms race. These two companies are actually worried that their AI tools will be used to spread wrong information, hate speech, fake news, toxic content, and negative impact on the society and that’s why they are on a secret mission in terms of their software and methods.

Google, OpenAI, and others have also been critical of Meta, mentioning how the open-source approach without any filters is dangerous. They want to think in a careful manner before giving away their details or open-sourcing code of AI technology.

Some experts also believe that Meta’s move will create a huge risk for Google and OpenAI to lose their leading positions in the AI market.

For the unaware, LLMA is a large language model that can be utilized to power online chatbots. It is trained on a massive dataset of text and code, and it can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way.

Meta’s bold move is also criticized by many and looked at as a major risk in the industry of AI. However, Meta’s decision to give away LLaMA is with the intention that the artificial intelligence will see more developments and quicker releases. It wants to involve more developers to have their own body of work. It also wants to improve technology and make it more accessible to the public.

This move will also promote innovation and improve lives in the future. Meta wants to make sure that AI is not just in possession of bigger companies but can be used for the good by smaller to medium-sized companies all over the world as well.
