Business Desk – The Income Tax Department on Sunday (September 14, 2025) dismissed rumours that the last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) had been extended till September 30.
In an official statement, the department said the due date remains September 15, 2025, as already announced earlier. The original deadline was July 31, 2025, which had been extended once to September 15.
“A fake news is in circulation stating that the due date of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” the department posted on X.
Clarification for Taxpayers
The IT Department urged taxpayers to rely only on updates from its verified handle @IncomeTaxIndia.
Its helpdesk is working 24×7 to assist with filing, tax payments, and related services through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and X.
Current Filing Status
Over 6 crore ITRs have already been filed for the assessment year 2025-26.
The department thanked taxpayers and professionals for helping reach this milestone and reminded those who haven’t filed yet to do so quickly to avoid penalties and interest.
Bottom line: The final deadline is September 15, 2025 there is no extension to September 30.
