Dalit youth beaten up with slippers in UP village

Muzaffarnagar: A Dalit youth was beaten up with slippers in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said on Sunday. The incident occurred on the heels of recent murder of a minor Dalit boy in Rajasthan.

The incident in UP came to light when a video clip of the episode went viral on social media. The police booked two persons. According to reports, Tajpur village head Shakti Mohan Gurjar and former head of Reta Nangla village Gaje Singh, beat up 27-year-old Dinesh Kumar with slippers. They also threatened the man with dire consequences. Aside from beating the man, the duo also made a video clip of the incident and posted it on social media to humiliate the people of the Dalit community. According to superintendent of police Arpit Vijayvargiya, village head Shakti Mohan has been arrested.

The incident sparked resentment among Dalits in the village. The workers of Bhim Army and members of the Dalit community staged a sit-in outside the Chhapur police station.
