Dehradun (Uttarakhand): An army jawan went missing in Siachen 38 years ago because of an avalanche that occurred when he was patrolling the area. His body has been found in a bunker in Siachen. The Ranikhet Sainik Group Centre identified the body as that of Chandrashekhar Harbola. He belonged to the 19th Kumaon Regiment. That soldier was a member of a troop comprising 20 jawans who were sent to the Siachen, the most inaccessible battle ground in the world where machines cannot function. People need extraordinary capacity to deal with the rough weather there.

The troop was fighting the Pakistani Army in 1984 when India launched Operation Meghdoot. When the troop was patrolling the area an ice storm occurred and several soldiers lost their lives in it. The bodies of 15 soldiers were found, but Harbola was among five others who remained missing. The wife of the soldier Shanti Devi is living in Saraswati Vihar colony in Dehradun. According to sub-collector Manish Kumar and Tehsilder Sanjay Kumar who visited the Harbola’s residence, his last rites will be performed with military honours. The body of another soldier was also found, but he is yet to be identified.
