New Delhi: India’s great former football player Chunni Goswami passed away on Thursday in Kolkata at the age of 82. He breathed his last at a Kolkata hospital. He was suffering from diabetes, prostrate and nervous system related diseases. He is survived by his wife and son Sudipto.
Chunni Goswami was the captain of the Indian team that won the gold medal of the Asian Games in 1962. He played 50 matches for India as a footballer from 1956 to 1964, including the Rome Olympics. Apart from football, Chunni Goswami also played first class cricket for Bengal. As a cricketer, Goswami represented Bengal in 46 first-class matches between 1962 and 1973.
Born in undivided Bengal’s Kishoreganj district (now Bangladesh), Chunni Goswami’s original name was Subimal, but he was known only by his nickname. The Indian Postal Department released a special stamp on his 82nd birthday in January this year for his contribution to Indian football.
