Sindhu’s dream broken, lost in Swiss Open final

Basel: World champion PV Sindhu was defeated by Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin in a one-sided match in the Swiss Open final on Sunday. The twenty-five-year-old Indian player had no answer to Marin’s quick and precise play.

The Spaniard beat Sindhu 21-12 21-5 in just 35 minutes. This is Sindhu’s third consecutive defeat against Marin. Marin had previously won both Super 1000 events held in Thailand. She was the runner-up in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals.

With this win, Marin, ranked third in the world rankings, picked up his third title of the year. Sindhu, ranked seventh in the world rankings, was playing her first final match in the last 18 months. Prior to this match, he had won five out of 13 matches against the former world number one player.
