In Tokyo, India will start on a new adventure. It’s time for the Summer Paralympics to begin, following a spectacular performance in the just ended Olympics. Since 1984, India has competed in every edition of the Summer Paralympics. At the 1968 Summer Paralympics, the country made its official début. At the Rio Paralympics, India sent 19 competitors to compete. This Paralympics marks the revolution of sports with India sending the maximum number of participants in the history of Paralympics. Sports like badminton and taekwondo will make their debut in the next edition.
On Wednesday, the first batch of Indian competitors for the forthcoming Tokyo Paralympics, including flag bearer Thangavelu Mariyappan, received a rapturous welcome. Officials from the Sports Ministry, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and the Paralympic Committee of India gave the eight-member group a warm welcome at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (PCI).

“Every athlete who will compete in the Paralympics is already a winner, and I wish them all the best,” PCI president Deepa Malik remarked to the contingent. Svayam India, PCI’s accessibility partners, equipped players who use wheelchairs with accessible cars for traveling for the first time.On Wednesday evening, a group of 14 people, including PCI’s president, would depart for the Japanese capital.
The Tokyo Paralympics 2020 will take place on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. It will end on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Every day at 9 a.m., DD Sports will broadcast live coverage of the Paralympics Tokyo 2020 on all cable and DTH platforms.
