Political Tension for Two Famous Fathers & Sons

By – Raza Hasnain Naqvi

Indian Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Central government Ajay Mishra Teni are under much political and family tension today. Both their sons have been arrested by the police on different criminal charges and remain in judicial custody. Their fate hangs in the balance while their families suffer from sleepless nights.

Two famous fathers find themselves in the limelight today in India. One father was unknown to India until October 2, 2021, but he became famous (infamous) on October 3, 2021. The second father was already well-known in India and worldwide, but he got an additional spotlight on October 2.

Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, allegedly ran over his car on agitating farmers in Tikunia, Lakhimpur Kheri district in UP, on October 3, 2021. As a result, eight persons died and 12-15 people were injured in the incident. Ashish Mishra was arrested on October 9 and continues to be in custody with charges under offences including murder under section 302 IPC.

Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, was detained on October 2 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. He was arrested on October 3 and charged with offences related to purchasing, possession and consumption of drugs.

Serious charges like illicit international drug trafficking have been levelled against him, and NCB has made allegations that Aryan was a regular drug consumer. Incidentally, no drugs were recovered from Aryan during the NCB raid on the ship. Order on Aryan’s bail hearing is reserved and will be known on October 20. Interestingly, Aryan Khan has been denied bail twice since his arrest.

Tension for Shah Rukh Khan & Aryan Khan

There is considerable tension in the Shah Rukh Khan household. Father Shah Rukh Khan and mother Gauri Khan have not spoken to the media about their son’s arrest. Aryan has been allowed a supervised 10-minute video call with his parents from Mumbai Central Prison.

There were also twitter hashtags that trended calling for the boycott of father Shah Rukh Khan by companies so that he does not do their ads. Byju’s, an educational technology company from Bangalore, has already dropped Shah Rukh Khan from their ads. Some Bollywood personalities, including Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Shatrughan Sinha, Pooja Bhat, and Swara Bhaskar, have supported Shah Rukh Khan and Aryan.

This incident also has political undertones as Minister in Maharashtra government Nawab Malik has alleged that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member was with the NCB officials during the raid. The minister has also made allegations against the NCB, asking, “how can NCB officers make their acquaintances a witness in the case?”

How the Future May Unfold for Aryan Khan

The police are now addressing Aryan Khan as Bandi number 956, the number allotted to him in the Mumbai jail where he is lodged. Aryan will get bail sooner or later, but the negative impact of this experience will stay with him for many years.

If he is not strong enough mentally to handle the thoughts of this trial that will keep emerging in his mind, he will have to take the help of an excellent psychologist to get him in the right frame of mind.

Tension for Ajay Mishra Teni and Ashish Mishra

Central minister Ajay Mishra Teni and his family will be under a tremendous amount of stress and tension over the arrest of their son Ashish Mishra. The Opposition parties are calling out unitedly for the BJP minister’s removal from his post. They have said that justice for victims is not possible till he remains minister.

Some parties are even calling for the minister’s arrest. They allege that the Lakhimpur incident happened due to his speech a few days before the incident, which threatened farmers. The Opposition and the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha have demanded severe punishment for his son, who is now in custody. All this would have added a lot of anxiety to Ajay Mishra’s family.

What Lies Ahead for Ashish Mishra

Ashish Mishra has a murder charge levelled against him in IPC 302, including other charges. This charge is serious. If inquiry proves that he is involved in the alleged crime, its punishment carries a death sentence or imprisonment for life.

Getting out of police custody by bail or a favourable ruling for Ashish Mishra would be difficult in current circumstances. There is massive interest in the media about the fate of Ashish Mishra and his father. In this case, the public is carefully observing and mentally noting each step taken by the police, the judiciary, the BJP, and the Opposition.

Just a Thought

Notedly, election season is coming in 2022. Seven states are going for assembly elections next year. What this means is that there can be multiple political consequences in this Ashish Mishra case. The ruling BJP-led government at the Centre needs to act decisively in handling its minister, Ajay Mishra. This action or inaction will be a political barometer for the party and impact its political standing in the assembly elections everywhere.
