New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is never tired of blaming the Congress for everything. Nevertheless, it has perhaps happened for the first time that a senior BJP leader has held the Congress responsible for the party’s loss in an election.
In the aftermath of its defeat in Rajinder Nagar assembly by-election, Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta blamed the low voter turnout and the poor show by the Congress for its drubbing. AAP’s Durgesh Pathak defeated BJP’s Rajesh Bhatia by a margin of 11,468 votes. The by-poll was necessitated, because AAP’s Raghav Chadha resigned from the Delhi assembly, after his election to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab.

Reacting to Gupta’s statement made on Sunday, a Congress leader said the BJP’s remark signified that had Congress done well, the BJP would have won. What could be more laughable than such a remark, he said. Gupta, however, drew solace from that fact that the AAP’s victory margin in 2020 has declined from 20,000 to 11,000 this time.
The party workers had worked hard, but unfortunately could not convert it into victory, Gupta said, adding that yet, they succeeded in reducing the victory margin of the rival party. He could not forget the Congress even in the defeat and blamed a sharp decline in the Congress vote share for the party’s loss. According to him, had the Congress made its presence felt, the result would have been different.
