Teachers’ Day is celebrated all over India on 5 September 2020.
It is observed to mark the birthday of India’s former President, scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Teachers play an important role in shaping the lives of young children who grow up to be responsible adults and builders of the nation.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888. The day is celebrated annually in his remembrance as Teachers’ day.
When Dr Radhakrishan took charge of the office of the second President of India in 1962, his students requested him to allow them to celebrate 5 September as a special day.
Dr Radhakrishan recommended them to celebrate the day as Teachers’ Day in order to show respect and appreciation of teachers in shaping the world.
Teachers’ Day is celebrated usually by school children and college children. Children enact the roles of teachers and gift them roses, chocolates, greeting cards and shower their love on teachers.
