Date:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday moved a resolution in the state Assembly opposing the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies.

At the same time, the TVK chief made it clear that he supports women’s reservation. He urged the Centre to implement the reservation within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats instead of linking it with delimitation.

Vijay Raises Concern Over Southern States

Vijay warned that delimitation based on population could reduce the representation of southern states such as Tamil Nadu.

He argued that states which successfully implemented population-control measures should not face a disadvantage because of their lower population growth.

The resolution reflects Tamil Nadu’s concerns over how a future delimitation exercise could affect the state’s representation in Parliament.

Centre Pushes for Support on Delimitation

The resolution comes as the Centre is seeking support for the delimitation bill, which has been linked to the implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies.

There has also been strong speculation over the past week that the Centre could introduce a constitutional amendment bill during the final two days of the ongoing Monsoon Session.

While Vijay has backed greater representation for women, he has called for it to be implemented within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats.
