Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a major political milestone on Wednesday by becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister since the Constitution came into effect.
Modi, who first took office on May 26, 2014, completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister, surpassing the record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served 4,398 uninterrupted days after the first general elections in 1952.
Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the importance of public service, humility and dedication. In a message posted on X, he said that people’s trust can only be earned through selfless service and commitment.
“Public service is the greatest measure of good governance. It is only the individual who works tirelessly with humility, dedication and a sense of duty who earns the trust of the people,” he wrote.
The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit verse, saying that leaders should always work for the welfare of the people and govern with humility.
Leaders from the NDA congratulated Modi on reaching the milestone.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the last 12 years of Modi’s leadership have helped restore India’s pride, strengthen its cultural identity and free the country from a colonial mindset.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in an article for India Today, said PM Modi has given the country a clear vision and strengthened people’s confidence in India’s capabilities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Modi as a “tireless Karmayogi” whose leadership has been guided by the principle of “Nation First”. He said the Prime Minister’s tenure has been marked by dedication to the country and the welfare of its people.
