MUMBAI – The voice that defined versatility for over eight decades has finally fallen silent. Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. She was 92.
The “Nightingale” of India, as she was fondly known alongside her late sister Lata Mangeshkar, succumbed to multiple organ failure after being admitted on Saturday night with a chest infection and severe exhaustion.
National Mourning and State Honours
Today, Monday, April 13, has seen an outpouring of grief from every corner of the country. The Maharashtra government has announced that Asha Tai will be cremated with full state honours later this evening.
Antim Darshan: Her mortal remains, wrapped in the national Tricolour, are currently kept at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, for public viewing until 2:00 PM.
The Funeral: The last rites are scheduled for 4:00 PM at Shivaji Park Crematorium—the same iconic ground where her sister Lata Mangeshkar was bid adieu four years ago.
A Plea for Privacy: Her son, Anand Bhosle, has made a heartfelt request to the public to avoid gathering at Shivaji Park to prevent overcrowding and allow the family a quiet moment of final parting.
A Voice That Spanned Generations
Asha Bhosle wasn’t just a singer; she was a cultural phenomenon. Holding the Guinness World Record for the most studio recordings, she sang over 12,500 songs in more than 20 languages.
From the cabaret-style energy of ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’ to the deep emotional longing of ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’, her range was unmatched. She was the muse for legendary composers like O.P. Nayyar and R.D. Burman, and her voice became the screen identity for actresses ranging from Helen to Urmila Matondkar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation’s tributes, stating that her “extraordinary musical journey enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts.”
Celebrities have been arriving at her residence throughout the morning to pay their respects. Sachin Tendulkar, AR Rahman, and Shraddha Kapoor (who is a grand-niece of the Mangeshkar family) were among the first to arrive.
“She didn’t just create music; she created memories for generations of real-life love stories,” choreographer Ganesh Hegde shared in a moving Instagram post.
What’s Open in Maharashtra?
Despite the state mourning, the Maharashtra government has not declared a public holiday. Schools, banks, and the stock markets (BSE and NSE) remain open today, though many institutions are observing a minute of silence to honour the departed legend.
