InternationalTrump Announces New Tariffs on Drugs, Trucks, and Furniture

Date:

International Desk – US President Donald Trump on Friday announced a fresh set of tariffs that will take effect from October 1, 2025.

100% Tariff on Branded Medicines: Trump said imported branded or patented drugs will face a 100% tariff unless the company is building a manufacturing plant in the US.

25% Tariff on Heavy-Duty Trucks: The president said this will protect American companies like Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Freightliner from “unfair competition.”

50% Tariff on Kitchen Cabinets and Bathroom Vanities & 30% Tariff on Upholstered Furniture: These will also start October 1. Trump said massive imports are hurting local manufacturers.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that foreign countries are “flooding” the US market with these products, and tariffs will protect American jobs.

However, not everyone supports the move:

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America argued that most drug ingredients are already made in the US or with its allies.

The US Chamber of Commerce opposed the truck tariffs, pointing out that most imports come from allies like Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland — countries that do not pose a national security risk.

Trump has already launched several trade probes in his second term, raising concerns for global businesses about rising uncertainty and costs.
