Due to the intense rains that have battered the area over the past 24 hours, southern Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing a serious flood crisis. Both the federal and state governments have initiated extensive rescue and relief efforts to assist the impacted populace.

On December 18, Tamil Nadu experienced unusual rainfall from the previous day that resulted in significant flooding in the districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli. The Indian Air Force stated in a post that it acted quickly and assigned Air Force Station Sulur to handle humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations, which are presently being carried out by MI-17 V5 helicopters.

Flood victims were rescued by the Indian Army from the Vasavappapuram neighborhood of Toothukudi. They pulled 118 people out of Vasipuram, Tamil Nadu’s inundated areas. The Indian Army’s Relief Column was activated at Vasipuram, Tamil Nadu, today due to the continuous rain in the region. The first column evacuated 17 women and 13 other people, including children, until 9:30 p.m. Twelve women, including one who was pregnant, and six children, including a baby, were evacuated with the second column. The Indian Army released a statement saying that the third column evacuated 26 women, 10 children, and 28 other people simultaneously.

Earlier today, rescue operations were carried out by officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the Toothukudi area of Tamil Nadu. Via a video conference from New Delhi, Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin conducted a review meeting regarding the flood situation in southern Tamil Nadu. Meena also asked the military for support in rescuing those who were stranded. Said that in response to the extraordinary flooding and rains in Tamil Nadu the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force have been called in for assistance. Chief Minister MK Stalin had earlier in the day stated that he had directed party cadres in the districts affected by the rain to help with the ongoing relief efforts.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu stated that he is keeping an eye on the relief efforts and communicating with authorities. Since Sunday morning, there has been a lot of rain in several Tamil Nadi districts, including Tirunelveli, Toothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi. This has caused floods and interfered with daily life in these areas. Due to the region’s ongoing heavy rainfall over the past few days, several parts of Kanyakumari city also experienced severe waterlogging and flood-like conditions.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for South Tamil Nadu, stating that heavy to very heavy rains with exceptionally heavy falls (above 204.4mm) are expected to persist over the region on Monday. Because of the intense rains on Monday, the Tamil Nadu government decided to close all schools, colleges, private schools, banks and financial institutions in the districts of Tirunvelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi.

In the meantime, a statement from Raj Bhavan stated that Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has called a meeting with senior officials of Central Agencies and Armed Forces Tomorrow, December 19, in Chennai to review the situation .in the state’s flood-affected southern districts and to mobilize as many resources as possible for rescue and relief.
