Due to the restrictions and limitations that people are going through their lives owing to the coronavirus pandemic, they are unable to mourn with family members or overcome the loss of their loved ones. This is leading to an increasing number of cases of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and other mental health problems among people across India who are directly or indirectly impacted by the pandemic.
In fact, in Delhi, it has been found that hospitals and clinics in the national capital are getting many cases of people who are complaining about symptoms related to psychological problems that have been triggered by post-traumatic stress. Delhi has gone through a deadly second wave of the pandemic wherein a huge number of people have lost their lives, oxygen supply shortage was at many hospitals, which increased the woes. Also, families grieved seeing their loved ones at hospital premises and crematoriums.
Due to safety and social distancing norms, experts say that family members were unable to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones or known people. The second wave had the whole family testing positive for coronavirus, and this led to many families unable to do the last rites of those who passed away as per their rituals and customs. This led to panic and triggering different types of mental health disorders for the ones who were shocked seeing the crisis in their lives.
Sadness, isolation, the grief of fear of losing loved ones, loss of income, decreasing socializing are leading to mental stress for people in this pandemic. Also, the negativity that gets spread on a daily basis in the form of news and information that gets circulated on social media channels is increasing the fear among people who didn’t contract the virus but still don’t get proper sleep and unable to concentrate on any activity due to the pandemic waves.
