Bareilly (UP): There was an alleged incident of religious conversions in Bareilly district. On getting information, the police booked six persons who were allegedly lured to convert to Christianity, official sources said.

According to additional superintendent of police Rahul Bhati, the action was taken after the state got information about religious conversion which was going on at the Vanshi Nagar locality in Bareilly, where more than 60 people were present. An FIR was lodged against six persons under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition Unlawful Conversion Act, 2021, the officer said.

An activist Himanshu Patel lodged a complaint about the incident. In the complaint, Patel alleged that some people were converted to Christianity at the residence of one Bhagwan Das by force. At the gathering, people made indecent comments against Hindu gods and goddesses.

Bhagwan Das, however, said that prayers were held in his fields for more than 22 years and allegations of religious conversion were made against him, but when the police probed, they found those allegations incorrect. He further said religious conversion had not been done at his residence.
