Lucknow: The Congress has decided not to contest the ensuing Mainpuri and Khatauli by-elections in Uttar Pradesh but will work for the upcoming civic polls in the state, party sources said on Thursday.

According to president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Brijlal Khabri, the party does not enough time to contest the ensuing by-elections, the it will pay attention to civic polls.

Khabri said that the Congress had suffered a lot in the Panchayat elections and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted to turn the situation in its favour. The Congress is ready to fight the civic polls, he said.

As the BJP, the SP, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are working for each other, they have kept away from raising the issues related to people, he said.

The Mainpuri Lok Sabha and Khatauli assembly by-elections will be held on December 5. The death of Samajwadi Party (SP) head Mulayam Singh Yadav has necessitated the Mainpuri Lok Sabha by-election, and the Khatauli assembly seat has fallen vacant after a law-maker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was disqualified after he had been convicted in Muzaffarnagar riots case.
