Date:

Lucknow: Chief electoral officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh Ajay Kumar Shukla has held over the process for by-election to the Rampur Sadar assembly seat. The notification for the by-polls was to be issued on Thursday.

In a release, the CEO said that the notification was held over till further orders. The CEO stalled the process for by-election to Rampur Sadar seat which has fallen vacant after the disqualification of sitting Samajwadi party legislator Azam Khan who was convicted in a hate speech case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked a special sessions court to hear and decide Knah’s appeal for a stay on conviction on Thursday itself that he may survive disqualification as lawmaker. The apex court said that the EC might issue the notification for the by-election on after November 11 after the sessions court takes a decision on Khan’s petition.
