Uttar PradeshCops beat up women in UP Ambedkar Nagar, say minor force applied

Date:

Ambedkar Nagar (UP): Police rained lathis on women and hurled choicest abuses at them in Jalalpur area of Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar district. According to reports, the policemen acted against women protesting against desecration of BR Ambedkar’s statue in the area.

The incident came to light after a video clip of it went viral on social media. When people across the state began to take the police to task for excesses, the cops said that they had applied minor force to quell a mob of women who were throwing stones at them and damaging their vehicles. The protest led to a dispute related to a plot of land whether the statue had been installed. When a group of women were staging a sit-in on Sunday, a police team rushed to the spot and tried to disperse them.

The police said that no sooner had they tried to disperse the protesters, they began to hurl stones at them. Another video clip showed some women protesters attacking the women cops. A police officer in Ambedkar Ajit Kumar Sinha said that some protesters had also damaged a vehicle of the police department. To quell the angry protesters, the police had to apply “minor force,” the officer said.
