Instinct is a motivation to act typically as an answer to certain external stimuli. Instinct is usually stereotyped and not something that is learned or experienced. Instinct is a natural need to do something that comes to them on their own. For example, newborn babies have the instinct to sense the problems of their parents without them being able to understand or communicate with each other. Same way, birds have an instinct that makes them migrate to another place before winter arrives. Instinct is a genetically identified behavioral pattern and is goal-directed.

For example, when Kamala was busy doing her project work in the hallroom, she sensed that her father who is not keeping well was calling her for help to get some water. Although she couldn’t hear his voice because of the distance between the hallroom and the bedroom, her instinct to care for her father made her get up from her chair and head towards the bedroom to check if her dad was alright.

Some people take decisions based on their instincts and when they are asked why and how they did so, they don’t have relevant answers. For example, when Shreyas was checking out marriage alliances on matrimonial websites, he shortlisted a few of them and then showed it to his parents. His mother who went through the girls’ profiles, didn’t like any of them and told him that even if he meets any of the girls, he will not be able to form a relationship with them. The advice came in the form of her instinct which has nothing to do with her experience or the learnings of girls of this generation. And in a way, when Shreyas met a few of them, he didn’t like any of them and came home with dejection.
Shreyas learned the lesson that at times, one shouldn’t go by the physical features and face value but go by the instinct or deep feeling that one gets when one looks at the opposite gender. Another example is a woman who has this instinct of feeling separated from her son that despite staying with him always, she keeps checking on him and his availability. It is her instinct that one day, she will have to live all alone and there would be no one to come to her for support and assistance as she ages which make her act weirdly even when everything is going normally.
Another example of instinct is when Riyona, a college student was asked to choose between finance and marketing, she chose marketing because it was her gut feeling that studying theory subjects will help her get a better job than learning finance and mathematics. She succeeded in her career with this instinct alone and thus, helped her family’s wealth grow by leaps and bounds.
Instinct is not something that everyone has and it is only rare for people who are blessed with this natural ability to go by certain things that they are able to judge or understand beforehand and rightfully. Thus, one need not trust their intuition blindly if they do not possess the same because every instinct is unique and works only for the people who truly have it by birth.
