Vijaywada (AP): If people lose faith and trust in judiciary, the very survival of democracy will be at stake, said Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana after inaugurating the Vijaywada court complex on Saturday. It is necessary to ensure that people do not lose faith and trust in judiciary, he said. Andhra Pradesh Chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court Prashant Kumar Mishra, judges of the high court and other courts were present on the occasion. Chief Justice Ramama who is set to demit office next said that during his tenure as Chief Justice, he focussed on filling up vacancies of judges and 250 high court judges were appointed. CJI Ramana said that he ensured that all sections of society, especially women and backward sections get proper representation in the judiciary.

He said that he wanted the Centre to provide funds to the state for construction of court buildings in some states which are facing financial crunch. He said, “Though there was some opposition from the Centre, some Chief Ministers, especially of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, supported me and demanded that the Centre provide the funds. I thank them for their support.” He appealed to lawyers to support various moves to strengthen the judiciary and recalled the days when he was a member of the Vijaywada Bar Association in 1983.
