New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son and secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah turning down an offer to wave the national flag after India beat Pakistan in a thrilling match at the Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday kicked up a political storm across the country. After a video clip of the incident went viral on social media, the opposition leaders took Jai Shah to task for not accepting the national tri-colour. Several Congress leaders shared the video clip.

Congress general secretary tweeted in Hindi, “I have papa, keep the tricolour with you.” Similarly, another Congress leader Ajoy Kumar tweeted in Hindi: “Looks like the tricolour was of Khadi …not of polyester!” Party’s legislator from Karnataka Priyank Kharge said, “Why would Jay Shah refuse to wave the tricolour after India’s victory against Pakistan. Any Indian would have done so reflexively. Did he want the Bhagwa Dhwaja or BJP flag?” Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, too, criticised Jay Shah for his refusal to hold the flag. She said that it was an insult to the nation.
