Meerut, July 25th 2018: Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, showcased several interesting and successful cases of Neurosurgery from the region today. Max Hospital has been conducting regular OPDs in Meerut for over two years, as part of their out-reach program and making a marked difference in treatment in the field of Neurosciences. The hospital has successfully treated more than 300 patients from the region.
Dr. Amitabh Goel, Director – Neurosurgery, Institute of Neurosciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, addressed the gathering at Meerut today and shed light on the growing incidence of neurological problems amongst people in tier II and III cities. Dr. Goel has been regularly conducting his OPDs in the region and has successfully treated several critically ill patients.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Goel said, “Various neurological and spine-related problems are being commonly encountered amongst youth and the issue gets amplified due to our ignorance towards addressing them on time. The patients who are showing up with such issues fall within the age-group of 20-30 years which until a decade ago were predominantly limited amongst senior citizens. These problems are correlated with lifestyle issues such as body weight, poor lifestyle, sitting posture, etc. and the incident rate can be reduced or occurrence time can be delayed with early detection and lifestyle modification. Neuro cases have shown a rapid increase in the past decade. This is both owing to better diagnosis and actual rise in incidents. However, it is curable provided they get diagnosed correctly and on time. Treatment in advanced stages in patients can involve multiple modalities and chances of reduced post-treatment life expectancy.
He further said “We have been conducting regular OPDs in the region which has allowed the patients an access to best quality treatment at their doorstep. We have treated several challenging and complex cases of the region during last 2 years and few of them are present here to talk about their experience at the hospital which clearly validates their growing trust in our services and care.”
Present at the conference, Mr Ajit Tomar all of 26 years, had come to the OPD with complaints of headaches for the last 3 to 4 weeks with occasional vomiting and difficulty in walking. Upon investigations it was revealed that he was having tumor like cyst deep inside the brain. Due to the cyst the water outflow of the brain was affected and the ventricles which contain the brain water were markedly enlarged in size which was causing further increase in pressure on the brain. It was determined that he would definitely need surgery for removal of this cyst. Endoscopic technique was adopted for the surgery in which a very small cut was made on the head and the cyst was completely removed through this minimally invasive technique. The surgery went off well and he was discharged in a perfectly normal condition. His complaints of headache have since then completely resolved and he is leading a normal life now.
Another case was of Mr. Ashok Kumar who is 59 years and had attended the OPD with complaints of pain in both thighs; the right side pain was resolved with bed rest and some medical treatment. However, the pain in his left leg worsened so much that he was barely able to move. He was not able to lift his left leg and also had marked weakness in the muscles of the left leg. The MRI that he had brought along with him did show a tumor like thing in the upper lumbar L1 region.Upon closer examination it was found that the MRI was also showing a large broken fragment of the L 4-5 disc and which had shifted to the left and had also travelled up some distance and hence was not readily discernible on the MRI. A repeat MRI confirmed that there was indeed a far lateral disc prolapse (whats this). Mr Kumar successfully underwent endoscopic removal of the disc from the left side and the tumor at the L1 level under microscope through a small incision. He made a quick recovery from endoscopic combined with microscopic technique and is doing well.
