New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India has expressed concern over the guidelines brought by the central government regarding digital media. The Guild has said that these guidelines will change the way in which publishers publish news on the Internet and it is also suspected to violate the freedom of media in India.
The Guild has expressed deep concern over the Digital Media Ethics Code issued and notified under the Information Technology Act 2000 by the Government of India in a press note. The Guild has said that these guidelines will give the Central Government the right to block, delete or modify any news published anywhere in the country without following any judicial process. Apart from these guidelines, publishers are also being forced to adopt a grievance redressal procedure. These guidelines are expected to impose non-logical restrictions on the digital news media and the entire media.
The Guild has expressed concern that the government did not consult media institutions or journalists before issuing these long-term rules. The Editors Guilt has said that the government should consider the freedom of media under the constitution of the country in the name of control of social media before banning it because media is an important pillar of democracy. This press note has been issued by Editors Guild President and Senior Journalist Seema Mustafa, General Secretary Sanjay Kapoor and Treasurer Anant Nath.
