Judicial Infrastructure Needs to be Upgraded: CJI

In the presence of Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana spoke at the inauguration event of the new annex building of the Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad Bench, raising concerns about the country’s judicial infrastructure. “In India, the judicial infrastructure has always been an afterthought. According to The Bar and Bench, courts in India still function with decaying infrastructure due to this attitude, making it impossible to act efficiently,” the Chief Justice observed.

“Only 5% of court complexes have basic medical aid, and 26% of the courts do not have separate toilets for women,” he continued. Sixteen percent of the courts are devoid of men’s restrooms. Nearly half of the courthouses do not have a library, and 46% do not have a water purification facility.” “If you want a different outcome from the court system, we cannot continue to function in this state,” Ramana added, emphasizing the importance of sufficient infrastructure.

“I have delivered the idea to the Union Law Minister,” he stated of the crucial suggestion related to judicial infrastructure. I’m expecting for a quick answer and for the Union Law Minister to speed up the process.” “Many a time, people are not enthusiastic in approaching courts,” the CJI observed, while stressing that courts in India guarantee constitutional rights and have protected people from governmental acts. But it’s past time to debunk this myth. The public’s trust in the court is a democracy’s greatest strength.”
