Ministry of Health approves Dexamethasone for treatment of corona patients

New Delhi: Corona virus infection is continuously increasing in India and so far more than 5 lakh people have been infected by the epidemic across the country. Meanwhile, dexamethasone has been approved by the Union Health Ministry for the treatment of corona patients. The steroid drug dexamethasone would be an alternative to methylprednisolone.

Explain that methylprednisolone was already being given to patients with corona virus, but after the approval of dexamethasone can now be given to patients as an alternative to methylprednisolone.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid commonly used to reduce inflammatory conditions in the body such as allergic disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. Apart from this, this medicine is also used to treat autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and myasthenia gravis.

It helps in protecting patients from these diseases by reducing inflammation. It is also known to suppress the body’s natural immunity. This is the reason that patients often start it only after being tested for infection like TB. The patient is very likely to catch such infection during the use of the drug. If we talk about its side effects then it includes depression and increased blood pressure.
