Mamata wants judge changed in case against Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to the Calcutta High Court asking that her petition be heard by another judge. Mamata Banerjee has filed a petition against the victory of BJP’s Subhendu Adhikari from Nandigram seat. Right now this case has been given to Justice Kaushik Chanda. In a letter written on behalf of the Chief Minister by her lawyer to the Chief Justice, two reasons have been given behind this appeal of Mamata Banerjee.

The first is because there are reports that Justice Chanda was earlier associated with the BJP, Mamata Banerjee said, adding that there is a reasonable apprehension of bias, adding that in April she had oppose the appointment of Justice Chanda as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court.

“Justice must not only be done, but it must also be seen to be done,” she said, adding that she stressed the need to “maintain public confidence in the judiciary”.
