8 cops including a DSP killed in firing by criminals during raid in Kanpur

Lucknow: Kanpur: At least eight Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, have been killed in an encounter with miscreants in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Eight police personnel have been injured, while two criminals have also died during this period. The UP Police has given this information.

Police said that on midnight between July 2 and 3, a team of police was going to arrest the culprit Vikas Dubey at Dikaru village under Chaubepur police station. An encounter took place during that time. Just as a police team was about to reach the whereabouts of the culprit, indiscriminate firing was carried out on top of the police team from the roof of a building in which Deputy Superintendent of Police SP Devendra Mishra, three sub-inspectors and four constables were killed. All this happened in such a hurry that the police did not get a chance to recover. Six policemen and a common citizen including SO Bithoor are seriously injured. All the injured have been admitted to the Regency Hospital in critical condition.

Giving details of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police HC Awasthi said the notorious criminal might have got an inkling of the impending raid.

He and his henchmen put up massive roadblocks to prevent the police personnel from proceeding towards their hideout. As the police team was caught unawares, the criminals fired at them from a building rooftop leading to the deaths, Awasthi said.

On getting information about the incident, Additional DG (Law and Order), IG (Kanpur) and the senior SP of Kanpur rushed to the spot, where a forensic team has started investigations. The forensic team will be joined by another team from Lucknow.

Two criminals, purportedly belonging to the Vikas Dubey gang were also killed by the police, hours after the bloodbath.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police has also been pressed into action, the DGP said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tributes to the slain policemen and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to their family members.
