Mamta to contest by-election from Bhawanipur, sitting MLA resigns

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will contest the by-election from her old seat Bhawanipur. Sobhan Dev Chatterjee, sitting Trinamool Congress MLA who succeeded in this seat, resigned this afternoon to Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay. Mamta Banerjee lost to Nandigram seat to BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari in the assembly election results announced on May 2. According to the rule, she will have to win the election within six months and come to the assembly, only then she can remain the chief minister.

Mamata Banerjee has been contesting from Bhawanipur seat before Nandigram. On the other hand, Shobhandev contested from Rasbihari seat. This time, due to Mamta’s going to Nandigram, he fought from Bhawanipur. There he defeated BJP candidate actor Rudranil Ghosh.

There are 294 seats in the state assembly. Elections were not held in two of these seats due to the death of candidates. The candidate died after voting in one seat. Apart from these, five BJP MPs also contested the Assembly elections, out of which three were defeated. The party has decided that the rest of the two will also remain MPs, so they did not take membership of the Legislative Assembly. Now after the resignation of Shobhandev from Bhawanipur, there will be a total of six by-elections.
