New Delhi: Amid a raging controversy between Twitter and the Center over compliance with the new rules, Twitter today told the Delhi High Court that it will appoint a Grievance Officer within eight weeks. Twitter also told the court that it is in the process of setting up a liaison office in India to comply with IT regulations. This office will be his permanent one.
Twitter’s interim resident grievance officer, Dharmendra Chatur, stepped down on June 21, following which Twitter appointed California-based Jeremy Kessel as the new grievance officer for India. However, Kessel’s appointment was not in line with the new IT rules, as these rules mandate that all nodal officers, including grievance redressal officers, should be based in India. A complaint was filed against Twitter in the Delhi High Court on May 28 by Amit Acharya, a lawyer practicing in the High Court and Supreme Court.
The petition states that Twitter is an ‘important social media intermediary’ as prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021 and hence must ensure compliance with the statutory duties imposed on it by the provisions of these rules.
