Ashleigh Barty of Australia has become the new champion of Wimbledon. World number one Barty clinched her maiden Wimbledon title on Saturday, July 10, beating Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in the women’s singles final. This is Barty’s second Grand Slam title. Both the players had entered the finals of Wimbledon for the first time and the competition was also strong. Barty, who showed a strong game in the first set, was trapped by Pliskova in the second set and won the tiebreaker to take the match to the third set. Here Barty showed his dominance from the beginning and won the title.
The 25-year-old Barty, the 2019 French Open winner, had reached the final of a Grand Slam for only the second time and won the title both times. Barty, considered a strong contender for victory in the final, started in the same fashion and broke Pliskova’s serve twice in the first set to take a 4-0 lead. However, Pliskova again tried to break Barty’s serve twice in a row, but Barty won the set 6-3.
Eighth seed Pliskova showed her strong game in the second set. Pliskova overcame Barty in long rallies and collected her points. Pliskova was seen coming in color from this set and the match went to tiebreaker. Here the Czech player completely dominated Barty and won the tiebreaker 7-4 and won the set 7-6.
In the third set, Barty took the lead by breaking Pliskova’s serve at the very beginning and did not give her any chance to return after that. Barty earned the distinction of becoming Wimbledon champion for the first time by winning the deciding set 6–3. Barty thus ended Australia’s 41-year wait in the Wimbledon women’s singles. Before him, the last time Australia’s Evan Goolagong Koli won the title in 1980.
