Sonia Gandhi nominated Netta D’Souza as acting head of the party’s women wing on Tuesday, a day after Mahila Congress Chief Sushmita Dev quit the party and joined the Trinamool Congress. The National Secretary of Congress, KC Venugopal, stated in a Statement, “Netta D’ Souza has been nominated for temporary President by Congress until full-time chairmanship has been chosen, with immediate effect.” Ms. D’Souza donned various roles in the past. She has been the secretary of the student wing of Congress, which is the NSUI. Apart from that she has also been a prominent member of the Youth Congress.
The news came only one day after Dev, a former Assam MP from Silchar, resigned from the party. She eventually became a member of the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata, West Bengal. Dev stated in her letter to Sonia Gandhi that she was quitting the party’s primary membership, but she did not specify why. “I think that whatever task was assigned to me, I did my best to fulfil it. And if there were any flaws in my work, I hope the president would overlook them,” she remarked.

Dev quit two days after meeting Sonia Gandhi and former party leader Rahul Gandhi in the national capital with the newly constituted Assam Congress team. Dev is the daughter of the late Santosh Mohan Dev, a former Union Minister. In 2014, she was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Silchar parliamentary district.
Her departure from the Congress is just another major setback for Assam’s grand old party. There were rumours that she was leaving the party before the Assam Assembly elections. She had, however, denied leaving the party at the time. Several high-profile defections have occurred in the Assam Congress in recent days.
