The state government notified the Supreme Court at a suo-moto hearing on the case that Ashish, the son of Union minister Ajay Mishra ‘Teni,’ who has been charged with the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
A nationwide outcry ensued after eight people were slain in the Lakhimpur Kheri district while farmers were mounting a demonstration against the Centre’s three legislation. Four farmers and a journalist are among the victims in this case. The incident sparked widespread condemnation of the Uttar Pradesh government, governed by Yogi Adityanath of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During the hearing, the court also underlined its discontent with the state government’s probe into the case thus far. The UP government was then directed to inform the highest court of an alternative agency to conduct the investigation.
